Launched in 2022, the Cartier Santos-Dumont lacquered collection comprises three versions (rose gold/cream, platinum/burgundy, and steel/black). While the rose gold and platinum versions were limited editions, the black lacquer model is not. However, it remains rare and difficult to obtain.

This steel model with black lacquer finish quickly established itself as a favorite with the public and the Cartier aficionado community alike. Although it was not the most publicized launch, it left a lasting impression thanks to its unique design. The Santos-Dumont, originally designed by Louis Cartier for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont in the early 20th century, remains a timeless timepiece. Known for its elegant square case, the Santos-Dumont continues to represent the most refined side of Cartier's Santos collection.

The stainless steel case of this model measures 43.5mm high and 31.4mm wide, with a sublime thickness of 7.3mm, making this reference an elegant watch in its own right. The black lacquer finish adds depth to the design without masking the case's sharp bevels, highlighting its unique shape. The glossy black dial, engraved with squares for a three-dimensional effect, features applied Roman numerals and sword-shaped hands, all surrounded by a printed chemin de fer minute track.

The inverted black dial of this Santos-Dumont works wonderfully with the two-tone case. The shiny black alligator strap completes the whole look.

Powered by the hand-wound 430MC movement, based on Piaget's ultra-thin caliber, the watch offers a 38-hour power reserve. With no seconds hand or date window, the design remains uncluttered.

The addition of black lacquer is a nice surprise, offering a distinct yet familiar interpretation of the classic design of the Santos and its Dumont version. It's a watch that has left a lasting impression, proving that sometimes, unexpected choices can become the most precious.
